Calling all tech geeks!

Starcraft 2 is coming out and methinks I might want to play it.

So, tech gurus... find ol' Kabal a new machine for <1k. Just the box is fine.

Ready... go!

This looks pretty good. Comes in at $775, so there's some slack for a copy of Windows 7 if you want that, or more power somewhere - probably more RAM if you're going Windows 7, but no need if you stay XP.

You could also move up to a pair of Radeon HD 4850 512 MB for around $115 each.

Actually, for straight power, you should get two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...5-238-_-Product rather than the two I listed above.

In fact, fuck it, here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...e-gtx,2676.html

Tom's Hardware also has PC configurations for certain price points: $500, $1000, & $2000.

Their $1000 recommendations for case and PSU are solid, you could easily sub those in for what I put above.

Their CPU and GPU choices are dubious though. They're going with a tri-core AMD Phenom in hopes of overclocking it and unlocking the dormant core. They're also going with massive overkill for video. I know they're doing it for experimental purposes, but I'm of the opinion that you want more CPU and adequate graphics, not adequate CPU and monster graphics. Bad call there, I think, and when they do their next guide the other way 'round, I think I'll be proven right.

And, in fact, the very first reader comment:

When you say SBM: Enthusiast System, I am expecting this to be more than just another gaming rig. You may have your own reason for sticking to a Phenom II x3 720 and HD5830 crossfire but I believe a Phenom II x4 955 and HD5770 crossfire would make more sense or more well-balanced (instead of trying your luck by unlocking cores). In fact, we could also grab a HD5870 and downgrade our mobo a little and that would make a truly well balanced enthusiast system.

Awesome thanks for all the help Dave.

Interesting. Do motherboards come with the bios to just plug em in and go or does something more have to be done to em?

No, just plug them in and enable it in the BIOS. There's also a jumper you have to run from one card to the other, it's pretty obvious.

You have any trouble let me know. I have a single card right now, because I don't need the second one yet, but I'll be getting one soon for D3.
